In West Hollywood, California, the remains of Dirk Shafer, a former centerfold for Playgirl magazine, whose articles chronicled his escapades as a covert spy in the 1995 parody movie “Man of the Year,” was found. He was 52. Shafer was found deἀd in his car near his home in West Hollywood, California on March 5, 2015.
According to Craig Harvey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s Office, Mr. Shafer was discovered in the front passenger seat of his car on a residential street.
After an autopsy, He found that Shafer dἰed from “methamphetamine and cocaἰne toxicity,” with hypertensive cardiovascular dἰsease probably playing a role. The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is where Shafer is buried.

“Man of the Year,” a fictionalized portrayal of his life, explores the conflicts that arise from being a secretly gἀy man who serves as an s*x icon for heteros*xual women. After publicly coming out in the film, Mr. Shafer’s career as a neo-dist model slowed down.
Stephen Holden described the movie as follows in an interview with The New York Times:
“Gleefully sabotages the notion that s*x objects are sacred objects. On a deeper level, ‘Man of the Year’ treats Mr. Shafer’s modeling experience as a metaphor for the way society pressures gay people to act straight. After watching Mr. Shafer wriggle uncomfortably inside the role he has agreed to play, it comes as a relief when he finally abandons it.”
Another Shafer film, “Circuit” (2001), focused on meetings in circular gy. A police officer from a small town who relocates to West Hollywood finds romance and adventure through a persona. Later, Mr. Shafer was employed as a personal trainer, and in 2012, he made one final appearance in Playgirl.
