Daniel Irvin Rather Jr. is an American reporter, commentator, and former evening news anchor for the national news. Rather started his career in Texas. He became well-known all over the country after his coverage of Hurricane Carla in September 1961 helped save thousands of lives.
The first radar weather report was made by putting a clear map on top of a radar image of Hurricane Carla. In his first national broadcast, he helped get 350,000 people to leave their homes safely.
He wrote about some of the most important events of our time, like the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Gulf War, 9/11, the Iraq War, and the war on terror.
Because of how important his stories were, he was given a better job at CBS News, where he became a White House correspondent in 1964. But the real question is, is Dan still alive?
Is Dan Rather Still Alive?
Dan Rather is still alive, that’s true. In January 2018, he started a news show on The Young Turks’ YouTube channel called The News with Dan Rather. Since 2021, he has been using the Substack platform to write the newsletter “Steady.”
Rather was born on October 31, 1931, in Wharton County, Texas. He was the son of Daniel Irvin Rather Sr., a ditch digger and pipe layer, and the former Byrl Veda Page. When Dan was young, his family moved to Houston.
There, he went to Lovett Elementary School and Hamilton Middle School. In 1950, he graduated from Houston’s John H. Reagan High School. In 1957, Rather got married to Jean Goebel. They have a son and a daughter and live in both New York City and Austin, Texas.
