Accusations Against The Neonatal Nurse Who Allegedly Murdered Seven Infants And Attempted To Murder Ten More: Dangerous Influence

On Monday, a nurse in the United Kingdom pleaded not guilty to murdering five infant boys and two infant girls and to ten counts of attempted murder.

According to The Independent, prosecutor Nick Johnson told the jury at Manchester Crown Court in northwest England that Lucy Letby, 32, was a “constant, malevolent presence” in the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital.

The prosecution claims that between 2015 and 2016, Letby killed or attempted to kill multiple infants by injecting them with insulin and air. They say she made three separate attempts to murder the same infant.

Johnson testified that after January 2015, the hospital experienced a “significant rise in the number of babies who were dying and in the number of serious catastrophic collapses,” whereas prior to that date, infant mortality rates were similar to those at other busy hospitals. Johnson concluded that “a poisoner was at work” at the hospital.

When asked by reporters why there had been such a dramatic increase in the number of infant deaths at the hospital, Johnson said that investigators had identified Letby as the “common denominator” and linked the deaths to shifts in her working schedule.

Johnson told the jury, “Lucy Letby was on duty when both were poisoned, and we allege she was the poisoner.” As admission to a neonatal unit is strictly controlled, “there’s a very restricted number of people who could have been the poisoner.”

All 17 of the kids who collapsed were not victims of “naturally occurring tragedies.” And Johnson added. When things started going south for these 17 kids, “we say,” the woman in the dock was to blame because she was a constant, malevolent presence.

According to the Cheshire Police Department, Letby was initially arrested in 2018 on suspicion of committing the crimes, but “was subsequently bailed pending further enquiries.”

A year later, she was again detained “on suspicion of murder in relation to the deaths of eight babies and the attempted murder of six babies,” as well as “the attempted murder of three additional babies,” as reported by the police.
