At Sunday night’s 95th Academy Awards, Michelle Yeoh won the award for best actress. She is the first woman of Asian descent to win this award. Yeoh won the award for her performance in “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once,” which was praised by critics. She is also the first performer from Malaysia to win an Oscar for best actress.

Yeoh is the first person of Asian descent to win an Oscar for lead acting. She is the fifth person of Asian descent to win an Oscar for acting. “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof to dream big and dreams do come true,” Yeoh said as she accepted her Oscar.

She also said, “Ladies, don’t let anybody tell you you’re ever past your prime.” Yeoh gave her Oscar to her mother and “all the moms in the world because they really are the superheroes and without them none of us would be here tonight.”

In “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once,” Yeoh played Evelyn Wang, a stressed-out Asian American immigrant who runs a laundromat and is shocked by the idea that she could live an infinite number of lives in the multiverse. As she learns to deal with this strange new world and gains amazing new powers, she also has to deal with rifts in her family that, in the end, pose a grave threat to her very existence.

She also has to deal with a tax audit. Yeoh told The Hollywood Reporter in January when she found out she was nominated for the film, that  “it’s taken a long time. But I think this is more than me.”  She also said that Asians are always coming up to her and telling her.

“Asians (are) walking up to me saying, ‘You can do it, you’re doing it for us.’ It’s like, ‘I understand. I totally understand.’ All this time, they’ve not been recognized, they’ve not been heard.”
