On Monday, an explosion tore through a metals company in Ohio, spilling molten metal and debris that poured down on surrounding buildings. At least 14 people were injured, most of them with burns, according to officials and witnesses.

The explosion propelled a plume of smoke into the air, which could be seen for miles around the destroyed facility, which was located around 15 miles (24 kilometers) southeast of Cleveland. Fire agencies from all around northeast Ohio were called to the I. Schumann & Co. metals plant in Bedford after an explosion at the plant of unknown origin occurred there.

Captain Brian DiRocco of the Oakwood Fire Department spoke to the reporters on the scene and stated that 13 people were sent to the hospital, several of them suffering burn wounds, and that one more person was being treated on the premises.

At least one of them was in very serious condition, and another one had to be rescued from the wreckage. DiRocco stated that the falling debris spared individuals who were at adjoining companies and that all of those who were injured were on the premises.

    DiRocco said –

“The people were mostly walking wounded,”

“I’m sure there’s a lot of people that work here that were in shock.”

DiRocco stated that he had been to the location in the past and found that it was a secure location if it weren’t for the fact that it’s a foundry, that is. As you are working with molten metal, there is always the possibility of inherent risk. The business stated that they did not know what caused the incident, but that the damage to the factory was “severe.”

    I. Schumann and Co., which produces copper, brass and bronze alloys, said in a statement –

“We will work alongside investigators in their search for answers as part of our commitment to Northeast Ohio, where we have been operating for more than 100 years,”

Matthew Wiggins, owner of the neighboring business Rose Colored Gaming, told WOIO he heard a large explosion and that “within a second or two, it sounded like large amounts of debris were hitting the roof.”

    Wiggins said –

“Things were falling off the walls, falling off shelves. We went out front and there was like smoldering rocks and molten metal in the yard. Tons and tons of smoke. Fire billowing out of the building across the street,”

Joe Sarconi, who was also a witness, said that a brick wall around the property had been destroyed. A beam went flying down the street. That other beam flew across the street and broke our window Sarconi said. Interesting, but bad.

The explosion happened about 70 miles (112 km) northwest of East Palestine, Ohio, where a train carrying dangerous chemicals derailed earlier this month, starting a fire that sent a cloud of smoke over the town and made thousands of people leave.
