After the death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who was beaten to death by Memphis police officers last month, the U.S. Justice Department will help review the Memphis Police Department, according to city officials.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland sent out a notice about the review. In the bulletin, it said that the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Justice Department would take part in an “independent, external review” that the city had asked for to look at the Memphis Police Department’s special units and policies on using force.

On Sunday, the Justice Department did not react promptly to a request for a statement that was sent to them. On Friday, the Memphis Police Department terminated the employment of a sixth officer who was involved in the death of Nichols. Five other policemen, all of whom were Black, had already been terminated and charged with murder in the second degree. White officers make up the sixth and final group to be terminated.

According to video that was made public by the city of Memphis, after a traffic stop on January 7, Nichols was subjected to brutal beatings by five Memphis police officers who are now charged with his murder. During the beatings, Nichols repeatedly yelled out, “Mom! Mom!” as he was struck with kicks, punches, and baton blows.

Three days after the altercation that took place in the city where he resided with his mother and stepfather and worked at FedEx, he was taken to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries and died. The debate that has been going on for some time in the United States regarding racial inequality and police brutality has been given new life by his death.

According to the city, the investigation would include participation from the Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services within the Department of Justice. RowVaughn Wells, Nichols’ mother, and Rodney Wells, Nichols’ stepfather, are expected to be in attendance for the State of the Union speech that Vice President Joe Biden will deliver on Tuesday in Washington.

The burial for Nichols, which took place on Wednesday at a church in Memphis, was attended by Vice President Kamala Harris as well as the family of other Black persons killed by police in places across the United States.
