Elon Musk was criticised by President Joe Biden on Friday for buying a social media site that “spreads misinformation all over the world.”

At a Democratic event in Rosemont, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, the president allegedly said, “Elon Musk goes out and buys an organization that spews bullshit all over the world.”

Following reports on Friday that Twitter had fired hundreds of people worldwide, the president made a statement that may potentially change how one of the most important platforms in the world functions just one week after Musk bought it.

Following the acquisition, there were accusations of an increase in hate speech and racist remarks on the website, and in the days that followed, several sizable sponsors stopped their Twitter campaigns.

Biden has been “outspoken on the necessity of social media platforms continuing to take steps to prevent hate speech and misinformation,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre earlier Friday told reporters.

She stated, “That belief extends to Facebook, Twitter, and any other social media sites where people can propagate false information.

Musk issued an open letter last week to reassure advertisers that he did not want the social network to turn into a “free-for-all hellscape” before the news of his takeover leaked.

Friday morning, he posted that Twitter has experienced a “huge loss in revenue,” which he attributed to “activist groups pressuring advertisers.” Later, he addressed the tweet about the layoffs, saying that “sadly there is no choice when the company is losing over $4M/day.” Three months of severance were provided to departing staff, he wrote.
