A small plane crashed off the coast of Costa Rica on Friday, and among those believed dead are the German fitness studio magnate who runs Gold’s Gym.

According to local sources, one of the six individuals on board a private jet that crashed while en route from Mexico to Limon was businessman Rainer Schaller, who owns Gold’s and other brands.

According to sources, Schaller’s partner, Christiane Schikorsky, their kids, and a fitness instructor were also on board the flight, which was led by a Swiss national.

The wreckage of the aeroplane was discovered in the water 17 miles from Limon airport, according to Costa Rican police on Saturday. Although two bodies and some luggage have been found, the bodies have not yet been identified.

Public Security Minister Jorge Torres said, “We have retrieved several bits of the jet that were swept in by the tide, as well as two bodies,” according to AFP.

According to Costa Rican authorities, the aircraft was a nine-seat Piaggio P180 Avanti produced in Italy that lost contact with the control tower in Barra de Parismina close to Limon at around six o’clock.

The RSG Group, which owns 21 international gym chains and lifestyle brands like Gold’s Gym, McFit, and John Reed, is stated as having Schaller as its founder and CEO. 2020 saw RSG buy Gold’s Gym when it declared bankruptcy due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

The conglomerate employs 41,000 people directly or through franchises in 48 different countries.

After a crowd crush at the Berlin Love Parade techno festival in 2010 claimed the lives of 21 people and injured more than 500 others, Schaller gained international attention as the festival’s organiser.

German authorities charged Schaller’s security with failing to prevent a crowd from entering the festival grounds through a tunnel.
